January 01, 2022

The center of the southern half of Sri Lanka is mountainous. Several mountain ranges can be found in this area. Piduruthalagala marks the highest point.

According to the SRTM data, its elevation is 2,512 m. Kirigalpoththa is the second highest with an elevation of 2,363 m.

Gonagala (1,311 m) is located away from the center and towards the south-west part of the country. Also, several small hills can be seen in the northern half of Sri Lanka--Ritigala is the highest mountain (749 m) in the northern half.

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission—a collaborative effort by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), the German, and Italian space agencies—used two different radar antennas to acquire two signals at the same time, for the calculation of surface elevation. The mission acquired radar data from 11 to 22, February in the year 2000.
