Alfa Laval’s multi-chamber desalination system (MDS) transforms seawater into clean water that is up to the standard required for power plants, oil & gas operations, and cruise liners. With this energy-efficient system, communities and industries have quick access to clean water, minimizing the environmental impact. When communities need fresh water, they can always depend on Alfa Laval’s MDS.

Seawater is pumped into the system, which has many evaporation and condensation chambers, each equipped with patented Alfa Laval plates. Seawater is heated and partially evaporated in the chambers. The vapor from the last chamber is condensed into pure distillate.

Alfa Laval promises quality (MDS availability > 95%) you can depend on. The system produces the highest quality distillate with a conductivity of less than 20 μS/cm at the lowest possible overall production cost. The MEP system offers the lowest possible consumption of both electric energy and chemicals—for example, the electric energy consumption of the MEP-4-750 desalination unit is less than 2.5 kWh/m3. The MDS can supply 180 - 1,000 cubic meters of fresh water a day, and therefore, ships need less fresh water when at port.

Typical qualities :

  • Electrical consumption range: 1.3–3.9 kWh/m3
  • 30% - 70% less electric power than comparable reverse osmosis systems
  • 50% - 80% less electric power than multi-stage flash desalination systems
  • No pre-heating of the seawater when seawater temperature is < 25°C.
  • Can operate on the steam outlet of the steam turbine generator
  • Corrosion-resistant materials withstand seawater and brines
  • Cleaning once a year
  • Produces high distillate purity of 5-10 ppm
  • Water can be used for potable or technical use as required

Alfa Laval says that the freshwater generator consists of several titanium plate heat exchangers. All the plates are identical, with two gasket configurations being utilised in order to form both a condensing and an evaporating plate channel. Compared to traditional shell and tube technology, the Plate Technology gives higher thermal efficiency. A continuous thin film of water over the entire plate surface also minimizes the risk of deposit build-up (scale) and thereby downtime. Corrosion-resistant titanium heat transfer surfaces and non-coated materials withstand seawater and brines.
