The rapidly growing electrified transportation and renewable energies demand better-performing batteries. The number of electric vehicles on the world’s roads continues to increase rapidly as countries are moving away from petroleum-powered vehicles. Electric vehicles, solar, and wind power systems are driving the demand for lithium batteries. Lithium, mined on land, is a critical component in Li-ion batteries.

BroadBit, a technology company based in Finland is revolutionizing the battery industry with its innovative chemistries and processes to power transportation, engine starters, portable electronics, and backup systems.

Li-ion batteries are made from rare and expensive raw materials—Lithium, Cobalt, and Nickel. BroadBit has reported a rechargeable battery whose energy comes from environmentally abundant compounds. BroadBit says its innovative chemistries and processes address NCM (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) type Li-ion battery problems with better battery chemistry and unique green manufacturing methods.

This new battery is based on metallic sodium and replaces all the key components with low-cost, safe, and widely available alternatives. It is neither a molten salt battery nor a saltwater battery. However, commonly known as “table salt”, sodium chloride (NaCl) is used as one of the active materials. BroadBit says its new batteries are extremely high-powered and have a longer lifetime compared to Li-ion batteries. The batteries are scalable and they can operate in a wider operating temperature range says BroadBit.

This battery would be cheaper without the reliance on rare materials in the battery cell. BroadBit expects to save about 40% in manufacturing costs and about 65% in material cost which leads to over 60% overall cost reduction. The company says the higher energy version is 300 Wh/kg.
